Diane Haleem, PhD, RN, Nursing, East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, PA, USA
Learning Objective #1: identify community service opportunities to facilate student learning.
Learning Objective #2: describe how filling a community need can make a difference to both the community and students.

The Wellness Service Learning Nursing Project at East Stroudsburg University represents the Department of Nursing’s commitment to community-based care and community service learning. By incorporating Service Learning hours in nursing courses students engage in health promotion and disease prevention community service learning activities with individuals and families across the life span.  Students make a difference in the lives of others by performing Stroke screenings, Diabetic screenings,  Blood Pressure screenings as well as educate the community about Skin Cancer, Stress Relief, and Nutrition.  These are only a few of the health promotion and disease prevention activities the students coordinate.  In addition, students demonstrate care and compassion for people who need a kind word and someone to listen to, thus truly demonstrating the art and science of nursing.

This presentation will outline how students make a difference by offering screening and educating the community by developing programs, teaching health promotion to and disease preventing to members of our community.
