Using a Dedicated Evidence-Based Practice Website to Promote Data-Driven Care of Hospitalized Children
Susan J. McGee, MSN, RN, CNP, Center for Professional Excellence, Research & EBP, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH, USA
Learning Objective #1: identify one barrier to the implementation of EBP in a hospital setting.
Learning Objective #2: discuss the benefits and limitations of using a unit specific EBP webpage to support EBP implementation.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an established method for improving clinical practice and has been shown to improve cost-effectiveness of patient care. Despite the evidence that EBP promotes positive outcomes, nurses have been slow to incorporate this process into practice. One major barrier to nurses implementing evidence in their daily work is the lack of time to search the literature. The objective of this project is the design, implementation and evaluation of a website which enables nurses and other direct care providers to easily perform literature searches and to access a repository of the current evidence on specific nursing and pediatric care issues. The goal is to minimize time as a barrier to implementing EBP. This pilot website will be designed specifically for the healthcare providers (HCPs) on A7Neuroscience at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC).The website will be created and evaluated through four phases. In Phase I, brainstorming sessions will elicit the HCPs' needs of the website. In Phase II the site will be created, including an immediate feedback link. In Phase III, the website will be activated and the number of hits the website receives will be tallied monthly for six months. Phase IV will include a satisfaction survey of the site and a time study. The time study will compare the speed with which evidence is obtained by the EBP website as compared to established websites available through the internet. Descriptive and text analysis will be conducted to complete the evaluation. The desired result is an increase in the use of EBP by creating an easily accessible website.
