Traditional or Online: How Should Faculty Advise?
Carol O'Neil, PhD, RN, CNE, School of Nursing, Suite 311, University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD, USA and Cheryl Fisher, MSN, RN, Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, Bethesda, MD, USA.
Learning Objective #1: identify the differences between learning in a face-to-face and an online environment.
Learning Objective #2: identify the characteristics of students who are successful in an online learning environment.

As the number of online nursing courses increases and students can choose whether to take a course in the traditional classroom or online, students are faced with the daunting question, "should I take this course online?"  The focus of this presentation is on what the advisor can do to help students make this decision. A study was conducted in which the same face-to face and online versions of a course were compared.  The outcomes were used to develop guiding questions that the advisor can ask students to predict their success online and therefore to guide students in their decision making.
