Learning Objective #1: 1. Describe parents’ responses to receiving BMI results for their children.
Learning Objective #2: 2. Describe the school nurse’s role in assisting parents to use the BMI information to improve their children’s health.

A study was conducted in a large school district in Arkansas to determine if parents have changed home life behaviors since receiving the results of their children’s BMI. Parents in nine elementary schools were surveyed regarding issues related to home life changes that might have been made based of the results of their children’s BMI results. Questions related to the parents’ knowledge of the effects of overweight and underweight, the value of the BMI information, perception of their children’s weight, and their interaction with health care providers were included on the survey. The purpose, methodology, results and implication of the study will be disseminated to the participants. Suggestions to help the school nurse in assisting parents to us the BMI information to improve their children’s health will be presented.
