Learning Objective #1: describe the HIV/AIDS population seeking emergency medical care in this study. | |||
Learning Objective #2: recognize chief presenting complaint specific to HIV/AIDS population seeking medical care in the ESD and relate the complaint to ER disposition. |
Design: Descriptive study utilizing medical record review of persons with HIV/AIDS seeking emergency medical care.
Setting: This study took place in the ESD of a 968 licensed bed urban teaching public hospital in the Southwest US. The hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center and second largest regional burn center in the US. The ESD patient visits in FY 2006 were 139,578 with 42,682 patient admissions. The county population is 2.3 million with a homeless population of greater than 6000. The number of individuals with HIV/AIDS in Dallas County in FY 2004 was 18,313 and the number of HIV/AIDS patients in the hospital clinic system in 2005 is 5267.
Sample: A convenience sample including all known or self-disclosed HIV infected persons presenting to the ESD during the two month data collection period. All information collected has been blinded and used as aggregate data to protect sample confidentiality.
Methodology: A descriptive study with retrospective medical record review. There were no interventions in this project.
Results: Study results are pending with study completion January 31, 2007.
Conclusions: Study conclusions indicate need for more in-depth research to look at methods for delivery of emergency medical care to HIV infected patients in the emergency services department. The completed study results and conclusions will be available prior to presenting the poster at the conference.
