Listening for the Story: Coaching the New Graduate Nurse for NCLEX Success
Margaret Williams, DNSc, RN, Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing, Quincy, IL, USA
Learning Objective #1: Describe collaborative partnerships between academic faculty and staff educators that support of the new graduate nurse in their pursuit of NCLEX licensure.
Learning Objective #2: Describe strategies that both staff nurse and educational services department staff can take to help the new graduate nurse to pass NCLEX.

The federally funded residency program was a partnership between Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing and Blessing and Illini Hospital. In 2004 when the program was designed, we addressed the staff educators’ concerns regarding the stress of new graduates related to NCLEX passage and the unit responses when there were NCLEX failures. The project director was a faculty member at Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing and designed a supportive component using  NCLEX  resources at the college, computer lab / software and devised a coaching method to be used with all new graduate nurses in the Residency Program. Using narrative pedagogy and student-tailored strategies, each graduate is supported with an array of services until they are successful in passing NCLEX. At this time, this has resulted with the eventual 100% NCLEX  passage of all new graduates nurses with 100% one year retention rate. The multiple strategies and experiences will be shared with the audience.
