Kathy Douglas, RN, MHA, BidShift, San Diego, CA, USA
Learning Objective #1: Understand how flexible workforce management programs create a collaborative culture that promotes effective staffing and improved outcomes
Learning Objective #2: Identify individual hospital and multi-hospital system benefits gained through cooperative practices and technology use

The nursing shortage and its implication for health care in the years ahead has led to a spate of nurse recruitment activities, and the search continues for measures that will help organizations compete for scarce resources. Yet long term strategies to ensure effective staffing are often overshadowed by the pressures of immediate needs and labor issues.

The growing gap between supply and demand of resources needed to deliver care cannot be ignored. The investment by hospital leaders in identifying alternatives and evaluating creative solutions must be made. A key question healthcare leaders should be asking themselves is, "What can be done today that will have immediate impact AND create a long term culture of change needed to support our future?"

This presentation will explore essential strategies for ensuring effective staffing, while addressing the unintended consequences of some of the more prevalent methods utilized today. The presentation will focus on how to work toward creating an organizational culture that has the strength to successfully move into the future and address the balance between the needs of the organization and the demands of the workforce. Practical examples will be provided that hospitals can implement to help alleviate existing staffing pressures and provide a supportive working environment.

This presentation will discuss how, by applying structure through technology, healthcare organizations can benefit from the power of enhancing effective staffing to deliver high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The presentation will detail how flexible workforce management solutions favorably determine the degree to which recruitment and retention objectives are met, vacancy and turnover rates improved, expenditures in agency spending reduced, and a positive organizational culture of retention created. Strategies to be covered will include incentive compensation, workplace rewards, flexible scheduling options, and authority/choice.
