Research Abstract

A descriptive correlational study that examined the relationships between boundary ambiguity, spirituality, marital relationship quality, and caregiver strain and depression among older African American spousal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease (AD)was conducted . The aims of this study was to:  1. describe the relationships between boundary ambiguity, spirituality, marital relationship quality, and caregiver strain and depression among older African American spousal caregivers of persons with AD; and. 2. Identify which variables are the best predictors of caregiver strain (boundary ambiguity, spirituality, marital relationship quality, and depression); and 3. Identify which variables are the best predictors of depression (boundary ambiguity, spirituality, and marital relationship quality.).   The sample consisted of  40 African Americant caregiving spouses who were at least 60 years old. Criteria for selection of participants was that the  primary caregiver to the spouse with AD, lives with the spouse and provides at least one daily caregiving activity. Study participants completed the Boundary Ambiguity Scale, the Spiritual Perspective Scale, the Marital Satisfaction sub-scale of the Dyadic Relationship Inventory, the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire,  the Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression Scale, and a demographic questionniare within the home environment. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Chi Square, and multiple regression.  Findings from this study suggests that there is a strong relationship between marital relationship quality and caregiver strain and depression.
