Integration of Health Promotion in Nursing Practice: A Case Study Approach

The purpose of this study was to understand the nurses’ concept of health promotion and their perceptions about the integration of health promotion in nursing practice. The study examined the nursing perceptions of significance and existing ways through which nurses are integrating health promotion into their practice.

The study utilized the qualitative case study design to explore and describe the concept of health promotion, its significance and ways to integrate health promotion strategies in nursing practice. The data was collected from three different sources; focus group discussion, key informant interviews, and document review. The data analysis was done through content analysis.

The emerging themes and categories from the study were presented in the form of framework which is based on four major themes: concept of health promotion, significance of health promotion in context of Pakistan, role of nurses in health promotion and strategies to integrate the component of health promotion in nursing practice. The findings of study highlighted the competences, support mechanisms and barriers which nurses faced while integrating the health promotion strategies in practice. Finding of the document review indicated the positive result of the course content which was related to health promotion.

The assertions made from this study were; first, health promotion in nursing practice is possible if nurses understand the meaning of health promotion, consider the health and developmental needs of the country, expand the role of nurses from health educator and care giver to developmental role, and focus on variety of health promotion strategies with inclusion of health education. Second, assertion made from the findings that Post RN BSc nurses have the knowledge and understanding of health promotion and its related strategies but enabling environment to practice the variety of health promotion strategies is not always present. Recommendations were made for curriculum, practice, and future research.
