Role of  Acupressure Wristbands in Preventing Post-operative Nausea and Vomiting on Laparoscopic Patients

Purpose:    To provide nurses with an understanding of how acupressure can prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting on laparoscopic patients.

Objectives:

  1. Define acupressure.
  2. Describe three advantages of acupressure wristbands.

Problem:  Post-operative nausea and vomiting remains among the most distressing side effects of anesthesia on laparoscopic patients despite advances made in pharmacological therapy.

Background:

When patients are asked what they find most anxiety provoking about having surgery, the top concerns almost always include post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Acupressure is an ancient Chinese alternative complementary approach to treat nausea and vomiting non-invasively and with out any untoward side effects. This approach has been used in Chinese medicine for over 4,500 years. This presentation will compare the anti-emetic efficacy, anxiety reduction and patient satisfaction between the commonly used anti-emetic drugs and acupressure wristbands in the prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting. The advantages of using the acupressure wristbands over the anti-emetic drugs will be discuss.

Post-operative nausea and vomiting will be define according to the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Society (ASPAN) guidelines. Risks factors and causes of post-operative nausea and vomiting will be identify. Nurses' role will be discuss in the prevention of PONV. Lastly, it will discuss a sure way to convince the institution to "buy-in" and to implement the use of acupressure wristbands in preventing the occurrence of post-operative nausea and vomiting into practice.
