Changing the Way Students Learn: Collaborating to Create Healthcare Delivery Simulation
Nelda Godfrey, PhD, APRN, BC, Department of Nursing, William Jewell College, Liberty, MO, USA and Judith Warren, RN, PhD, FAAN, School of Nursing, University of Kansas, Kansas City, KS, USA.
Learning Objective #1: discuss how informatics competencies necessary for beginning baccalaureate nursing students can be achieved using a comprehensive electronic health record as a central curriculum tool.
Learning Objective #2: describe how collaboration and innovation in a nursing education-industry partnership is gaining national interest adn recognition

Collaboration in innovative, multi-institution environments is no easy task.  However, through a partnership with Cerner Corporation, the University of Kansas, The University of Missouri-Kansas City, and William Jewell College, faculty and industry are working together to change the way students learn the discipline of nursing.  Using the Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice (ANA, 2001) as a guide, educators from three institutions work with informatics specialists at Cerner to design and craft a healthcare delivery system simulation called Academic Education Solutions. A consortium of educators and corporate representatives meet monthly to converse, trouble shoot and make changes to the system to improve its effectiveness as a teaching and learning tool.  Examples of relevant evidence-based practice findings are incorporated into corresponding computer screens, making EBP as close as a right-click of the mouse.  Though the findings are preliminary, students show evidence of thinking differently as they encounter and learn about the healthcare delivery system and sharing virtual patient data through this comprehensive electronic health record.
