Achieving your professional goals: Establishing a Chiron Publishing Mentorship
Anne Muller, RN, MSN, CNS, NP, Surgical Nursing, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Phila, PA, USA and Jane H. Barnsteiner, RN, PhD, FAAN, School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
Learning Objective #1: 1.identify two strategies to successfully developing a mentor relationship.
Learning Objective #2: 2.identify two essential resources for establishing a successful writing partnership.

Culture is a preoccupation with maintaining the current surroundings.  Mentorship, however, is a structured journey beyond the confines of the current surroundings into the perilous but exciting environs of personal growth.  This Chiron mentorship was created to improve the publication skills of the mentee while also developing a writing program for staff nurses at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

Establishing a publication partnership entailed multiple aspects of the writing experience. From refining literature search skills, to identifying journals, establishing partnerships and completing the writing process, a publishing mentor enables a mentee to explore multiple aspects of personal development while also facilitating achieving those goals.

While attending the Chiron conference I identified several publication goals and a established a timeline for the following year.  After identifying several topics of interest for publication an extensive literature search was performed.  Simultaneously, Dr. Barnsteiner developed a writing workshop for interested nurses at HUP and I was able to participate. The support and guidance from the other members of the group was essential to my refining my writing skills.

While this mentorship specifically involved publication and writing skills participation in the process also developed essential aspects of the mentor/mentee relationship, contributing to the sustainability of the project
