Integrating Genomics into an RN-BSN Gerontology Course
Barbara M. Raudonis, PhD, APRN, BC, School of Nursing, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX, USA
Learning Objective #1: define the term genomics.
Learning Objective #2: discuss two examples of genomic-related content applicable to older adults.

The Genomic Era is here and nurse educators must prepare the nursing workforce to use genetic and genomic science in providing care in all settings. A Consensus Panel met in 2005 and developed essential nursing competencies and curricula guidelines for genetics and genomics. In addition the Scope & Standards of Practice in Genetics and Genomics Nursing has been published. How can this content be integrated into an existing course? This presentation will describe how genomic-related content was integrated into an existing required gerontologic nursing course in an RN to BSN program. Strategies and resources will be discussed.
