A Cross-Cultural Research: Role Model Behaviors of Nursing Faculty in the United States and Japan, toward Enriching Faculty Development
Learning Objective #1: Describe cross-cultural research process focused on role model behaviors of nursing faculty.
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the issues of faculty development based on the similarities/differences and their background of nursing faculty role model behaviors between the United States and Japan.
In 1999, Japanese Government enacted to enforce faculty development in higher education. Japanese nursing education historically have been entrusted with diploma nursing schools, but the number of BSN programs has been increasing since 1992. Naturally issue of nursing faculty development becomes important in Japan. For one’s own professional development, each nursing faculty has to know the feature of themselves, and cross-cultural comparison promotes it. Then this cross-cultural research project by nursing faculty in the United States and Japan was started. The focus of the research project is on role model behaviors of nursing faculty. Nursing students observe their faculty’s teaching activities and their nursing practice as role model, and sympathize and try to identify with them. It is important for nursing faculty to self-evaluate their role model behaviors for autonomous development. In this symposium, the process and findings of the cross-cultural research focused on role model behaviors of nursing faculty between the United States and Japan will be presented. At first, the development process of Japanese original version and English translated version instruments which used in this research will be introduced. Next presentation will introduce current status of role model behaviors of nursing faculty in the United States, and then third presentation will introduce current status of Japan as well. The last presentation will introduce the findings from comparison between current statuses of role model behaviors of nursing faculty in the United States and Japan. Nursing faculty are situated in different condition according to its own country’s status, nevertheless, they need to make effort to their professional development to educate students to be able to provide quality nursing care to clients. The findings of this research project will be an important foundation for faculty’s autonomous development not only of the United States and Japan but also of other countries.
