EBP Beliefs, Implementation and Organizational Readiness: Psychometric Properties of Three New Scales
Learning Objective #1: Describe the validity and reliability of the evidence-based practice beliefs and implementation scales for nurses.
Learning Objective #2: Describe the validity and reliability of the organizational readiness for system-wide implementation of evidence-based practice scale.
Evidence from studies indicates that patient outcomes are at least 28 percent better when clinical care is based upon evidence versus steeped in tradition. Furthermore, there are some reports that healthcare professionals who practice from an evidence-based practice (EBP) approach to care are more empowered and satisfied in their roles, which may lead to a lower turnover rate in the nursing profession at a time when there is a national crisis in nursing workforce shortages. Despite this evidence, there has been a lack of empirically valid and reliable scales to systematically measure: a) nurses’ beliefs about the value of EBP and their ability to implement it, b) the extent to which nurses actually implement EBP in their clinical practice, and c) organizational readiness for system-wide implementation of EBP. Therefore, this symposium will present the psychometric properties of three new valid and reliable scales: 1) The EBP Beliefs Scale, 2) the EBP Implementation Scale, and 3) the Organizational Readiness for System-wide Implementation of EBP (ORSIEP) Scale. Data to support the validity and reliability of these three scales with practicing nurses and nurse educators will be presented. In addition, implications for use in clinical and academic settings will be highlighted.
