Using Visual Methods to Uncover Context

Learning Objective #2: The learner will be able to discuss methods designed to enhance developmental, cultural, and contextual relevance of research, and best address health disparities.
The purpose of this symposium is to address the utility of visual methodology with diverse subgroups, to increase our understanding of the developmental, social, and cultural context of health behavior. The goal of the symposium is to foster discussion targeting the development of methods designed to enhance developmental, cultural, and contextual relevance of research, and best address health disparities. In the first paper, we will present an overview of visual methods generally employed in community research; the second paper will discuss the use of photographs in portion sizing in children’s diet intake; the third paper will focus on the use of childrens’ drawings to illuminate the meaning of childhood illness, the fourth paper will discuss photo elicitation methodology as a mechanism for exploring cultural knowledge related to physical activity and dietary intake; finally, we will describe the use of photo voice to identify community strengths and resources in the design of relevant, interventions to promote physical activity in African American community members.
