Leading Change through Chocolate Chip Cookies: Developing a Shared Vision for Nursing Curriculum
Learning Objective #1: The learner will be able to explain how nurse educators can use change effectively in the realization of a shared vision.
Learning Objective #2: The learner will be able to describe how patterns of knowing link thinking and doing within the context of evidence-based practice.
Leading change is about providing a context for the emergence of new visions. Nursing education that creates connections between what students learn and how they will practice nursing envisions new possibilities for nursing curriculum. This symposium addresses how nurse educators can lead effective change by engaging different forms of inquiry to develop an inclusive understanding of nursing education within the context of evidence-based practice. The chocolate chip cookie is used as a creative exemplar to illustrate the context, content and conduct of leading change. Guided by the principles of chaos theory, this symposium provides a creative opportunity for nurse educators to discuss and exchange ideas about how to integrate the use of evidence as students learn to think in practice. An innovative education model that connects student learning to thinking nursing within the context of evidence-based practice will be presented and discussed. A research case study is presented that provides an evaluation of the education model. Through the use of story, both faculty and new student learning experiences of thinking nursing within the context of evidence-based practice are shared. The sharing of chocolate chip cookies will provide a reflective illustration of embracing different perspectives and different forms inquiry to create a context for the emergence of a shared vision for nursing education that enhances connections between classroom learning and the context of evidence-based practice.
