Description/Overview: An image of Alzheimer’s is visually depicted in this mixed media quilt of a nurse’s caring touch as she walks in silhouette with an elderly woman. I remember many times walking with my grandmother in her garden after a rain storm; and I visualize my mother doing the same. The rain depicts life, the water bringing new /continued life to the garden. Rain also may depict sorrow, as one sees the memories of life washed away (depicted by the hexagons); precious thoughts and activities no longer within grasp. I created this piece in January 2009 as a remembrance of my grandmother; and as a reflection of my own mother as she is experiencing Alzheimer’s. I visualize the touch of the nurses and other caregivers who reach out each day to be a caring presence in the lives of so many. Creating this quilt brought me a sense of spiritual peace and hope; as well as a way to reach out to others whose lives are touched by Alzheimer’s. My wish is that those who see this piece may join in the peace that a caring touch brings to those who share its connection.
Learner Objective #1: Gain a visual perspective of the impact of Alzheimer’s disease in a person’s life.
Learner Objective #2: Appreciate the caring touch of a nurse.
