Description/Overview: The NYP Nursing Residency Program funded by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence was created to assist the new graduate RN in acclimating to a large academic medical center in his/her role as a professional nurse. The program has many areas of support such as mentors, group processing and also didactic lectures from academic partners Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University. One additional area of support created by the Nurse Residents in the program was to aid the transition of the next cohort through creative expression writing a one page “Pearls of Wisdom” of strategies they found successful in assisting in transitioning into their professional RN role. The “Pearls of Wisdom” are bound and passed on from one cohort to the next and has become another avenue of support for the new graduate RN as well as an avenue of creative expression of the nurse submitting the “Pearls of Wisdom”. New cohorts have verbalized that they have found the “Pearls of Wisdom” very helpful in their transition and have assisted them in further understanding experiences they may encounter in the first six months. The Nurse Residents writing the “Pearls of Wisdom” describe anecdotally that the creative expression has been cathartic and has helped them to internalize what they have achieved during their first six months. The “Pearls of Wisdom” writing has shown to be an effective method in peer support for new graduate RNs
Learner Objective #1: The learner will be able to describe incorporating creative expression writing as support tool for new graduate RNs transitioning into their first professional nursing role.
Learner Objective #2: The learner will be able to describe how writing about transitional experiences can be a method of assimilating achievements during first six months of nursing.
