Description/Overview: This presentation will showcase an undergraduate nursing elective that fosters the use of aesthetics and creative expression to cultivate a compassionate and sensitive awareness of humanistic experiences. The focus of the course is to expose students to a wider range of human experiences through music, literature, poetry, photography, artwork and film in order to illuminate the beliefs and values that guide their actions. Students were required to utilize their own creativity to express and share their unique insights of the nurse and patient relationship. This poster presentation will describe the course development, aesthetic experiences and provide examples of student creative activities that contributed to their growth in patient interactions and caring instances.
Learner Objective #1: Appreciate the significance of this course in the promotion of aesthetic expression to illuminate issues pertaining to health and illness.
Learner Objective #2: Identify methodologies that can be utilized to promote the use of the arts to foster understanding of the lived experience.
