Description/Overview: Technology and nursing information systems are included in most nursing curricula. In the past, students frequently recorded their nursing experiences with scrapbooks, diaries, journals, photographs, and yearbooks. These artifacts have been used to document the history of a school of nursing or an era in nursing. However, many students do not keep scrapbooks or diaries, and many schools no longer produce yearbooks. Most students are proficient in the use of digital photographs, computers, and social networking. In an introductory nursing course at a Midwestern university, students learn about the history of nursing, current professional issues, and future trends. An assignment to create a short video project was added to introduce the class to using technology, such as digital images, narration, and music, to tell a story. Additionally, the assignment was designed to build community and teamwork as incoming freshmen transitioned to university life. Working in small groups in a computer technology center, freshmen nursing students use software to produce short movies during the early weeks in their nursing major. The movies contain still images and video, narration, animation, and various screen effects. Each student is asked to retain a copy of the movie and a copy is placed in the school archives. During an all majors’ welcoming gathering, several of the video projects are shared as a way of introducing the freshmen to the other classes. Although students may be unaware, they are making history and documenting it, recording their experiences in fun and creative ways. History in the making can grow and become the history of nursing.
Learner Objective #1: describe a project designed to develop teamwork and share experiences with incoming nursing students.
Learner Objective #2: discuss the use of technology in sharing and recording the experiences of nursing students.
