The EBPI Model (Levin et al., 2010) serves as the foundation for the evidence-based practice at Northern Westchester Hospital. The integration of EBP and Performance Improvement (PI) enables staff nurses to systematically identify and evaluate the clinical application of evidence. The model allows for focusing evidence review on specific clinical aims and for the performance of small tests of change to refine the implementation of evidence based interventions prior to full implementation of a pilot project. Clinical application of evidence is facilitated by this model because nurses can focus their evidence review and implementation on the most significant aspect of the problem in their clinical setting. Each aspect of a new intervention is evaluated with a small test of change and then all aspect or components are integrated for a final small test. All the while the processes of implementation are monitored to determine barriers and to insure accuracy (fidelity) of the practice protocols. Only after processes have been refined and fidelity assured are the affects of the intervention on desired outcomes measured. An active engaged EBPI team develops a working knowledge of the EBPI process and makes significant improvements in patient outcomes. Through the Nursing Shared Governance Structure of the EBP- Nursing Research Council the staff nurses have opportunity to learn the EBPI model and processes and develop projects to improve patient outcomes and help the hospital meet core performance measures while enhancing the nursing practice environment.
