ABSTRACT

Background: South Africa was rated amongst Sub Saharan countries that failed to prioritise basic focused HIV prevention programmes to combat the new HIV infections across their continents (UNAIDS 2009: 9). Implementing the health promotion guideline in the rural Hammanskraal region in North West Province, South Africa was one of the strategies considered to close the gaps noted in the community home based care division.

The aim of the study: This study aimed at exploring and describing the factors influencing the implementation of health promotion guidelines in the rural Hammanskraal region.

Methods: The study was qualitative in nature, following the explorative, descriptive and contextual design. Data was collected through two focus group discussions. The focus group discussions assisted the researcher in exploring the research question and describing the factors as they unfolded in the discussions. The transcribed data was analysed using the steps provided by Tesch method of data analysis found in Cresswell (2003:192).

Results: The four categories identified as factors influencing implementation of health promotion guidelines were: information, door-to-door campaigns, resources and culture as detailed in the article.

Conclusions: The study concluded that a successful health promotion programme required effective strategies that concentrated on strengthening the health promotion programme among the adults and the young people concurrently in order to address the cultural barrier brought by the topic.
