Intermountain Nurse Residency Program at McKay-Dee Hospital Center: benefits of nurturing the new RN

For decades, nurses have been aware of the difficulty that new graduate nurses face as they transition to the role of RN. Increasing patient acuity and advancing technology in healthcare add to the stress of learning hospital policies and procedures. This struggle to adjust to the new role is a major factor that affects staff nurse retention. McKay-Dee Hospital Center, an Intermountain Healthcare facility, has responded to this problem by implementing the Intermountain Nurse Residency Program. The program, created by Intermountain Healthcare nurse educators and staff nurses, was designed to: improve the confidence and competence of new graduate nurses; improve the retention rate of new graduates; decrease costs related to recruitment and orientation; and increase the overall quality of care provided to patients. This presentation describes the Intermountain Nurse Residency Program at McKay-Dee Hospital Center and the impact of the program on staff nurse retention. The presentation reviews national and local turnover rates as reported to Intermountain Healthcare Chief Nursing Officers in 2008 before the implementation and follows annual statistics through 2012.
