ABSTRACT

Aim: This paper outlines the premise of the African proverb that epitomizes the involvement and role of the wide community in raising a child. The premise is supported by the African philosophy of Ubuntu which emphasise solidarity, cohesiveness and sense of belonging among community members.

Method: . Firstly the topic was identified and the literature was searched through University of Pretoria Data base. The studies were categorised according to school health, UBUNTU philosophy, socio-ecological model, monitoring and evaluation and strategies for implementation of school health services literature. Each article was selected and validated carefully and the results were interpreted and summarised for presentation.

Findings: The literature provides knowledge on models such as Ubuntu philosophy, socio ecological model and multiple intervention programs that can be used by a nurse to provide holistic school health care by acting as a liaison office to different stakeholders who are acting in solidarity to shape the future of their children.

Conclusion: Synergising Ubuntu with the socio-ecological model assists us to move from the known to the unknown. The role of nurse in  school health must be used as a point of departure that assist in collaborative efforts to formulate the program and the competencies which will inform curricula of the school health nurse training.
