Learning Objective 1: Identify creative activites to build collaborative global relationships with nurses through on-line video conferencing

Learning Objective 2: Identify philanthropic activites to fund educational opportunites for Haitian nursing students

Creating a sense of global responsibility in nursing is an important leadership goal of STTI.  Beta Nu chapter designed an innovative initiative to bring local nurses into a relationship with Haitian nurses.  Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti healthcare services were limited and much of the challenge had to be met by nurses.  Initially a team from the ECU College of Nursing (CON) went to Haiti to assist with the reconstruction of the nursing program.  But to sustain a relationship with the Haiti School of Nursing, members of Sigma Theta Tau Beta Nu chapter instituted the “Honor a Nurse” initiative. This program offered members a chance to recognize faculty, mentors, peer, colleagues, and friends that were nurses and who had made a lasting impression in their lives. Individuals that were honored received a letter from the chapter acknowledging the gift and its purpose.  All proceeds from the campaign are donated to the Haiti Nursing Foundation (HNF) who collects and manages the funds.  Currently the chapter provides full tuition for one student enrolled in the nursing program. The Haiti Nursing Foundation also provides the chapter with photos, updates and correspondence with the sponsored student. This spring, using on-line video conferencing technology the chapter members and nursing students in the CON will dialogue with the sponsored student at the spring meeting. The discussion will include topics concerning nursing, health care and the needs of the Haitian population. This opportunity for collaboration with nurses and faculty increases awareness of global nursing issues and truly allows the chapter and student members to learn to give back to move forward.
