Learning Objective 1: Describe a leadership model applied to implement a nursing research program

Learning Objective 2: List at least 5 strategies to improve a nursing research program at a community hospital trough transformational leadership

Historically, nursing research has been in the academic setting. Developing a program of research in a community hospital has many challenges because of the uniqueness of that setting as compared to the academic setting. Many of the challenges lie in a lack of expertise, lack of protected nursing research time, and lack of resources.  Despite the seemingly impossible task of developing a successful research program in a community hospital, transformation leadership can overcome most of the barriers. This presentation will describe the journey of a hospital-based nurse research specialist’s implementation of a successful research program in a Magnet institution over one year.  The instituted nursing research program: (a) increased the number of research projects from one to over 20, (b) secured two extramural funding opportunities, (c) developed a research assistant mentorship program, (d) implemented hospital research grand rounds, (e) implemented nursing research classes, (f) tripled nurse attendance to the hospital research council, and (g) secured nursing leadership support for research.
