Learning Objective 1: To identify the body image of patients under the hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis

Learning Objective 2: To found some factors that were associated with the body image and get some cues in the dimension of clinical care

The purpose of this study was to explore the body image and associated factors of patients under dialysis treatment. 267 patients under dialysis (199 with hemodialysis and 68 with peritoneal dialysis) in three hospitals were recruited through purposive sampling between March 2012 to June 2012.The research instruments included demographic data, disease attributes, Taiwanese depression screening questionnaire, body image disturbance questionnaire, and Taiwan version WHOQOL(BREF)..

The results showed that (1). the mean scores of body image reported by hemodialysis samples and peritoneal samples was 1.23 and 1.76 respectively. The levels of disturbance of body image were between ‘’Not at all ‘’and ‘’Mild ‘’. (2).The level of body image reported by hemodialysis samples and peritoneal samples was positively correlated with depression, and negatively correlated with the quality of life.  (3).The predictors of body image for the hemodialysis samples wereFfemale, age, depression, hyperlipidemia, and BMI. It explained 32.2% of the total variances. The predictors of body image for the peritoneal samples includedFphysiological domain and psychological domain of quality of life, and glucose high group. It explained 41.3% of the total variances. The predictors of body image for the whole samples includedFperitoneal dialysis treatment, depression, social domain of quality of life, female, and no monthly income, or more than 50,000 NT. It explained 36.7% of the total variances.
