Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to state the importance of advancing education for advanced practice nurses on palliative care and end-of-life care.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to state some of the trends or strategies in palliative and end-of-life care.

As the older population in the United States continues to grow, there is an increasing need for Advance Practice Nurses to be ready to provide appropriate care.  Since many people are now living longer and with more chronic diseases, there are more people who can benefit from a palliative care team and appropriate symptom management at end-of-life. However, the literature suggests that nurses and advanced practice nurses are not universally knowledgable about appropriate referals to palliative care and symptom management at end-of-life. The purpose of this presentation is to raise awareness among nurses of the growing need for advanced practice nurses to be able to recognize the appropriateness of palliative care and also know some strategies for treating end-of-life symptoms.
