Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to verbalize the purpose, methods, and implementation of the DNP project.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to verbalize how the project incorporated a multisystem focus on the academic and physical benefits of physical activity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if increasing elementary teacher awareness of physical activity recommendations, which includes how increased physical activity can improve classroom performance and prevent obesity, as well as training and a model tool, would increase the amount of time physical activity is offered during the school day.

Objectives: To increase elementary teacher awareness regarding physical activity guidelines for children, to increase teacher awareness of the link between physical activity, improved school performance, and obesity prevention, and to increase the amount of time teachers offer physical activity in the classroom during the school day.

Methods: Teachers were presented with a questionnaire asking their awareness of education and health benefits of physical activity and national physical activity recommendations for children. They were asked the number of 10 minute sessions per school day they allow students to participate in physical activity in the classroom (outside of physical education class and recess). Information was then presented to teachers regarding the state policy guidelines, which are only half the amount of time recommended by national guidelines, the teachers’ role in helping children reach this goal, and the education and health benefits of physical activity. Teachers were presented with free training and copies of Energizers® for classroom use and were allowed to role play teaching some of the activities.

Evaluation: Pre, post, and 6 week follow-up of teacher awareness of the education and health benefits of physical activity and actual time teachers provided physical activity inside the classroom.
