Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify the barriers and benefits of third party reprocessing of single-use medical devices.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will understand possible solutions to some of the barriers in order to enhance third party reprocessing compliance.

Purpose: Although the FDA approves the practice of third party reprocessing with single-use medical devices since the1980’s, many operating rooms do not take advantage of the benefits that the program can offer. One of the biggest reasons for third party reprocessing non-compliance is due to surgeon resistance in using reprocessed devices which they fear would be inferior. Additional barriers for non-use of these devices include quality and safety concerns, deficiencies in program understanding and awareness, and lack of priority falling secondary to more pressing issues.

Methods: In order to investigate specific barriers for third party reprocessing compliance in a large urban hospital operating room, a 7 member working group was organized and comprised of 5 operating room team members, a sourcing agent from supply chain management, and a reprocessing vendor.  These individuals were asked to address six key questions that focused on barriers and benefits of the third party reprocessing program.

Results: Although 100% of these individuals were aware of third party reprocessing and supported the program, 71% felt onsite vendor support and further education was needed. In addition, 43% of this group was not aware of the total extent of the third party reprocessing program benefits. One practical suggestion from the survey was the relocation of the reprocessing bins from outside the OR domain into the actual OR’s. Another valuable suggestion included the identification of onsite champions. This pilot research project provided insight into barriers and possible solutions into expanding the scope of the third party reprocessing program in hospital operating rooms.

Conclusion:  As every health care facility struggles to find reliable low cost saving solutions, third party reprocessing is one venue to help alleviate the financial burdens that health care organizations are faced with today.
