Synergy: Leading the Way for our Patients and our Profession

Problem

Through the process of writing our document for Magnet redesignation, it was determined our current professional practice model was not enculturated nor was it rooted in nursing theory. Because of these two reasons, nurses were not able to articulate what was “driving their practice” on a daily basis.

 Purpose/Overall Aim

To identify a professional practice model that would align with the values of our organization and our nursing staff. A model that would enable nurses to answer the question, “why do we do what we do” and to move our staff away from a task-driven role to one of critical thinking and increased professionalism.

 Description

The process of identifying a new professional practice model began by surveying all nurses about their feelings and attitudes toward nursing and being a nurse at the organization. Responses were analyzed and multiple nursing theories were researched. Three models/theories were identified and voted on by Shared Governance members.  The AACN Synergy model was chosen and a workgroup was formed to design the schematic and plan for implementation. A retreat was held to unveil the model to the organization and an implementation and integration plan is currently underway.

While Synergy and the language of the model may be new to many nurses in the organization, the concepts and the intent of “matching the right nurse with the right patient” is not new. Our goal is to ensure every patient is treated by the best nurses possible.
