Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify structures and processes to improve retention and nurse satisfaction in the hospital setting.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to identify the goals and objectives of creating a Structural empowerment committee.

Literature supports that patient outcomes are directly correlated with staff educational level, professional growth and work satisfaction.  As part of the Structural Empowerment directive in the Magnet journey, the group established support systems to assist nurses in excelling in these three areas.   The SE committee, comprised of bed side nurses, nurse educators, human resource representatives, outreach nurses, community nurse educators, and ancillary departments leadership worked on ways to do just that.  Thru employee recognition initiatives- Pride Parking, recognition bulletin boards on units, and yearly nursing scholarship, this hospital was able to increase RN satisfaction thru recognition.  This hospital holds a fall professional development fair and a spring career/education fair supported by local universities and schools in addition to a cohort with a local university to support advanced education.  These initiatives help to increase staff education and certification.  We reached our goal of increasing our degrees RN's by greater than 5% in one year and certification by 2.5%. The SE committee also worked with Nursing leadership to form the Governance council to support the nursing councils in a unified manner.
