Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to verbalize the three (3) domains of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy Fellowship.
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to verbalize which of the Kouzes –Posner Leadership Challenge five exemplary practices were instrumental to the outcome(s) of the domain.
The three learning domains for the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA) Fellowship through which knowledge and competence are developed include: Individual Leadership Development, Advancing Nursing Practice through Leadership of an Interprofessional Team Project, and Expanding Scope of Influence within the organization, community, and profession. The GNLA uses the Kouzes-Posner Leadership Challenge (K-P) model as a framework for the fellowship through purposeful and intentional goal setting and behavioral change. The K-P model identifies five practices of exemplary leadership. Within each of the domains of the GNLA a specific exemplary leadership practice was developed and demonstrated subsequently impacting the outcomes within that domain. For Individual Leadership Development, Modeling the Way and Challenging the Process were the developmental exemplary practices. My three top areas for development that were highlighted included: initiating and developing ongoing relationships with key influential stakeholders in the organization, improvement in effective and influential communication, and increased advocacy and education for geriatrics. For the second domain related to leadership of the interprofessional team project, Enabling Others to Act and Encouraging the Heart were key to the facilitation and progress of the team. The interprofessional team project focused on assessment of delirium in acute care patients with targeted interventions to improve outcomes for patients. The final domain was focused on Inspiring a Shared Vision which was foundational to setting the course for expanding the Fellows organizational influence and initial impacting of local and regional initiatives for geriatrics.
