WKSP Creating a Culture of Civility: Awareness to Action

Friday, 15 November 2013: 1:00 PM-5:00 PM
Description/Overview: Does it seem like everyone is grumpy, angry or short-tempered these days? Have you ever noticed how one person's bad attitude can get carried into the work environment and infect everyone's attitude? Have you witnessed workplace bullying or been silenced by an incident you know negatively impacted patient or student outcomes or even nurse retention? Is incivility really contagious? If so, are there ways against workplace bullying in order to protect ourselves, our team and our patients? The answer is, YES! This will be a highly interactive session where we will examine the challenges and strategies for creating a culture of learning and civility within nursing and nursing education. Together we will explore the emotional, financial, and quality impact of incivility and workplace bullying. We will examine the similarities and differences between the three roles that contribute to the continuation of workplace bullying: the victims, perpetrators and silent witnesses. Participants will have an opportunity to gain awareness related to their own triggers and practice techniques for holding authentic adult-to-adult conversations to increase accountability for reducing workplace bullying within teams. By the end of the session, participants will have at least three actions steps to immediately apply on the first day they return to work to reduce workplace bullying.
Learner Objective #1: The learner will be able to define the financial and emotional impact of workplace bullying within healthcare and nursing education.
Learner Objective #2: The learner will be able to more deeply understanding personal triggers and identify three actions steps to reduce workplace bullying immediately within the work setting.
