Description/Overview:
Despite the high prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in college students, there are few experimental studies that have tested preventive interventions for this high risk population. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the baseline and immediate post-intervention findings from a randomized controlled pilot trial that tested the efficacy of the COPE (Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment) Program, an on-line self-paced 7 session cognitive behavioral skills building intervention, on stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms in college freshmen enrolled in a required one credit survey course during their first semester of
college. The second paper will describe the study’s post-intervention findings. The third paper will describe themes in the freshmen's evaluation feedback of the program. Implications for routine implementation and future research will be highlighted throughout the presentations.
