B 04 SPECIAL SESSION: Effective Interprofessional Leadership: Outcomes of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy

Sunday, 17 November 2013: 11:00 AM-12:15 PM
Description/Overview: As the complex needs in providing care for older adults are continuing to increase we must have nurse leaders who can facilitate a positive future within a climate of constant change and reform. Effective interprofessional leadership in acute care settings, community health agencies, and long term care facilities is necessary to transform relevant practice and policy. The purpose of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA) is to prepare and position a cadre of nurses to lead practice advancements along the continuum of care and to become actively engaged in policy efforts to promote improved care for older adults. Fellows in the GNLA have achieved significant outcomes in three domains: individual leadership and career development, advancement of practice through interprofessional leadership projects, and sustained impact at the organizational, community, and professional levels. Through the rigorous intellectual and experiential learning platform of the GNLA, dedicated mentoring and faculty relationships, and strategic partnerships with senior executives of healthcare organizations; opportunities are created for the Fellows to impact practice throughout organization, system, and community arenas. This session will present outcome data for each of the three domains and exemplars of specific achievements for each. In addition, a presentation by the Amy Berman Geriatric Nursing Leadership Awardee will be included in which this emerging leader’s significant contributions to the care of older adults is highlighted.
