Testing the Effectiveness of a Multifaceted Intervention for Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP)

Learning Objective #1: Describe strategies for translating research into practice that can be tested in multi-site studies
Learning Objective #2: Identify methods for measuring outcomes of an intervention designed to translate into practice evidence-based, acute pain management practices
Although evidence-based practices save health care dollars and improve patient outcomes, use of evidence by nurses and physicians is sporadic at best. Translating research into practice is an active process of promoting use of evidence by healthcare providers. The theme of this symposium is testing interventions for translating research findings into acute care settings to improve quality of care. A research model for translation research is set forth, and application in a multi-site, experimental study is described. Methods and outcomes of an effectiveness trial of a multifaceted intervention to promote adoption of evidence-based nursing practices for acute pain management of hospitalized elders is detailed in the second paper. In the third paper, development and use of an index of adherence to an evidence-based guideline is described and applied to outcome data to illustrate the effectiveness of the TRIP intervention (AHRQ RO1 HS10482).
