Learning Objective #1: know the foreign workers mental health status.
Learning Objective #2: know the major psychosomatic symptoms of foreign workers.

Foreign workers are currently one of the most important sociocultural and political phenomena. As a rule, foreign workers are in good health, although the immigration is by itself a mental health risk factor. Depression is important and common consequence of adaptation processes especially in immigration group. The purpose of mental health evaluation is to understand the mental health of foreign workers in Taipei. We use the Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) and Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire (TDQ) for two-step evaluation. The client were recruited to complete the TDQ if the BSRS score greater than 5. This study was conducted from Jan 2005 to Dec 2005. The totally 219 clients were interviewed by psychiatrist. These 219 clients consisted of 203(92.7%)women and 16(7.3%) men. The result showed average total score of TDQ is 13.32±7.53. The top three higher mean scores of TDQ were 1.I had trouble in sleeping (1.76±1.06) 2.I felt uneasy, uncomfortable (1.33±0.95) 3.I felt tired and weak (1.26±0.98). The TDQ is a culturally relevant questionnaire, which is adaptable for screening depressive people in the local communities. Implications for the health care services and possible strategies to improve the mental health of foreign workers are discussed.
