Coping Strategies of Individuals Living with Parkinson's Disease
Leah D. Phillips-Black, RN, MSN, ARNP, NeuroCare of Southern Indiana, New Albany, IN, USA and Sonia Rudolph, RN, MSN, FNP, Louisville Sleep Disorder Center and Jefferson Community College, Louisville, KY, USA.
Learning Objective #1: The learner will better understand how a patient copes with long term Parkinson's Disease.
Learning Objective #2: The learner will obtain interventional information on how nurses can assist patients with coping and living with chronic illness.

Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and causes many changes in the lives of the individuals who have the disorder.  The disease impacts the patient in their abilities to perform activities of daily living.            While medical treatment has been the focus of much of Parkinson’s research, chronic illness encompasses more than physical illness alone.  Inadequate coping strategies can cause psychological illness, which can, in turn, exacerbate the physical effects of the disease.  Coping strategies refer to how people actually respond to the stress.            In this descriptive phenomenological qualitative study, a community of individuals with Parkinson’s disease participated in open-ended interviews. The interviews were done one-on-one with a researcher and a Parkinson’s disease individual, tape recorded, and then transcribed by a non-biased third party.  The transcribed information then underwent content analysis with major themes or coping strategies outlined.            The question answers were coded line-by-line and themes were outlined.   Our hope is to present this data in a format that will be shared with nurses, Parkinson’s patients, and caregivers to benefit patients and their families in their day-to-day battle with this disease, until a cure is found.
