The Use of Rubrics in Student Nurse Clinical Evaluations
Nancy B. Fixler, MSN, RN, CC, In-Service Education, St. Mary's Hospital, Passaic, NJ, USA
Learning Objective #1: Discuss what a rubric is and how it can be used as a more objective and reflective tool in clinical evaluations for nursing students
Learning Objective #2: discuss how the use of a rubric can provide improved learning opportunities for both the learner and nurse educator

Clinical evaluations are a measure of a student nurse's ability to function adequately for a variety of patient care and professional parameters. Many faculty members find clinical evaluations to be not only time-consuming, but also lacking in specificity. In addition, tools used can be sometimes interpreted negatively by students, rather than as a learning opportunity to guide future performance. Rubrics have been widely used in kindergarten through college-level educational programs. Rubrics tie performance assessment to curricular goals and objectives. The use of rubrics in nursing clinical evaluations can provide greater self-directed learning opportunities, as well as a more concise and objective measure of performance.
