Family adaptation of the family caregiver with chronic schizophrenia in Korea Objectives : The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify influencing factors on family adaptation of the family caregivers with a family member having chronic schizophrenia in Korean. Design : A descriptive design was utilized to examine the relationship among family adaptation, family hardiness, self efficacy, and sense of coherence in families with the chronic schizophrenia in Korea. Population, Sample, and Setting : Data were collected over 6 month period on 265 families with a member having a chronic schizophrenia, in a psychiatric out-patient clinic of a general hospital and a government psychiatric hospital in Seoul, Korea Variables : Study variables and instruments included the Family Adaptation Scale, Family Hardiness Scale, Self Efficacy Scale, and Sense of Coherence Scale. Methods : Data were collected using self- reported questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results : Results indicated significant(‖.05) positive correlation among family adaptation, family hardiness, self efficacy, and sense of coherence. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that most powerful predictor of family adaptation was family hardiness (18%). The combination of family hardiness, self efficacy, and sense of coherence accounted for 36% of the variance in family adaptation. Data from this study suggest that family hardiness, self efficacy, and sense of coherence are significant influencing factors on family adaptation among the family caregivers with a family member having chronic schizophrenia in Korean. Conclusions : Data from this study suggest that family hardiness, self efficacy, and sense of coherence are significant influencing factors on family adaptation. Implications: These results have important implications for the development and testing of family nursing intervention for the families with a chronic schizophrenia. In developing nursing intervention for family adaptation, the major influencing variables described above need to be carefully evaluated.
