Learning Objective #1: describe a strategy to introduce staff nurses to the concept of evidence based nursing. | |||
Learning Objective #2: describe the steps of implementing department specific projects, including staff education, topic selection, literature review, hypothesis selection, project design, data collection and interpretation. |
The competition is open to all departments, and in fact every nursing unit is expected to submit at least one project. A kick off meeting was held in August 2005, announcing the competition and providing basic education to the nursing leadership, including charge nurses, nurse managers, educators, and directors. Unit teams were identified in August and each team selected a project. The projects were to be focused on clinical outcomes, employee satisfaction, patient satisfaction, or process improvement. The research project needed to be designed so that it would not require IRB review.
Teams met in August, began to review the literature pertinent to their topic and met with the “Research Coordinator”, our Quality Management and Patient Safety Director. Hypotheses were submitted in September for review and approval by the Vice President of Nursing Services and the Research Coordinator. Completed projects are due the end of February.
Posters will be developed for each project and all will be displayed for staff and the public in our lobby during Nurse’s Week in May. A winning team will be selected on Nurse’s Day and presented with a monetary reward that they may use as they choose for their team. They can use the funds for education or to provide some non-clinical improvement for their unit.
Our goal is staff education and recognition for the professional contribution of nursing to patient care.
