Translating Research into Practice: Using Indicator Data for Program Development
Judy-Lynn McGrath, BScN, MN, Schizophrenia Program, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, ON, Canada
Learning Objective #1: gain an understanding of how data collected to measure restraint use can be used for program planning
Learning Objective #2: reflect on strategies that support efforts to utilize least restrictive measures

The Schizophrenia Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto has seen a steady increase in the overall acuity of its patients. During the same period of time there has been a remarkable decline in the use of restraints and locked seclusion. The demonstrable gains over 2 years is as result of program commitment to the practice of least restraint by using alternative methods of intervention and reducing restraint use.
The Schizophrenia Program has 212 beds and 9 seclusion rooms among 5 inpatient units. Drawing from best practice literature, efforts to decrease restraints using integrated approaches encompassing administrative policy, education, supporting staff, as well as data collection and analysis that links case review with consultation and practice change.  The Program has initiated all aspects of this multipronged approach to restraint reduction. Continued focus on indicators of restraint use supports efforts to utilize the least restrictive measures and promote patient centred care.
