Learning Objective #1: The learner will be able to have knowledge about the benefits and barriers using the Chronic Disese Self Management Program for Korean elderly.
Learning Objective #2: The learner will be able to know the effect of the CDSMP in health, depression, self-efficacy and medical expenses of the olders in Korea.

Objectives : To evaluate 1-month and 3-month health status, depression, self-efficacy and medical expenses of a community-based self-management programs for older Koreans. Design : A single group pre-post comparative design. Method : Participants in a community health center were conveniently selected to participate the CDSMP. The program included one 3 hours session per week for 14 weeks. Outcomes evaluated at 1-month and 3- month included modified Self-rated health status Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale, Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-item Scale, and 1-item medical expenses scale. Results : Self-rate health scores were significantly increased at just after the intervention (M=16.22), 1-month (M=17.57) and 3-month (M=19.04) (x2=32.06, p=.000); Depression scores (reversed) were also significantly increased at just after the intervention (M=6.04), 1-month (M=7.75) and 3-month (M=8.39) (x2=29.92, p=.000); Self-efficacy score was significantly increased at just after intervention (M=12.87), however, the scores were decreased at 1-month (M=12.73) and 3-month (M=12.04). But all three scores continuously higher than that prior to the intervention (M=8.65) (x2=32.42, p=.000); Medical expense score was decreased at the end of the intervention (M=1.57), however, the cost scores were increased at 1-month (M=2.48) and at 3-month (M=2.39) (x2=7.81, p=.050). Conclusions : CDSMP is effective to increase self-rate health and self-efficacy and to decrease depression of Korean elderly. However, there was no advantage of the program to decrease medical cost of Korean elderly. The CDSMP can be applicable to trans-cultural population.
