Improving Preceptor Self-Efficacy and Role Knowledge Using an Online Educational Program
Rachelle D. Parsons, RN, Nursing, College of St. Benedict/St. John's University, St. Joseph, MN, USA
Learning Objective #1: describe the impact of a preceptor on-line eduction program on the self-efficacy of public/community health nurses.
Learning Objective #2: describe the impact of select demographic variables on preceptor self-efficacy for public/community health nurses.

In preparing baccalaureate nurses for the professional nursing role, collaboration between practice and education is epitomized in the preceptor education model. This model has traditionally partnered upper-level nursing students with staff nurses as preceptors. One of the many issues surrounding the preceptor education model is preparation of nurses to effectively function in this role. The presented study explored the impact of a preceptor education program on knowledge and self-efficacy needed to perform as an effective preceptor.  This intervention study utilized a convenience sample of community/public health nurses (n=62) with a minimum of one-year of nursing experience. Participants were required to complete a pretest on knowledge and self-efficacy in the preceptor role, followed by a four hour on-line preceptor education program.  Knowledge and self-efficacy were again measured after completion of the educational intervention.  Control variables identified based on a comprehensive literature review and self-efficacy theory included preceptor age, education level, previous preceptor education, place of employment, gender, and previous preceptor experience.  Outcomes of this research will impact preceptor preparation and improve educational preparation of baccalaureate nursing students in precepted experiences.
