Questionnaire Development to Assess Asthma-Related Quality of Life Among Children
Li-Chi Chiang, PhD, RN, School of Nursing, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan
Learning Objective #1: Learn the domian of quality of life among children and adolescent with asthma.
Learning Objective #2: Learn The instrument development process including the reliability and validity.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a questionnaire to assess asthma-related quality of life among children with asthma. Design: A cross-sectional survey study of 474 participants recruited from Taiwan for instrument development and psychometric testing. Methods: The questionnaire was developed in 3 stages. In the first stage, the findings of a previous qualitative study were used to construct the Asthma-Related Quality of Life Scale (ARQOLS). In the second stage, the scale¡¦s psychometric properties (content validity index and item analysis) were established. Finally, the internal consistency (Cronbach¡¦s alpha) of the ARQOLS was examined in a sample of 474 children with asthma, aged 6-14 years. Construct validity was established by principal component analysis with varimax rotation. Findings: The 35-item ARQOLS exhibited better then expected reliability with Cronbach's alpha 0.96. Five factors emerged from factor analysis, giving a total variance of 61.02%. The 5 factors (and their Cronbach¡¦s alpha coefficients) were restriction of social life (.90), physical disturbances from signs/symptoms (.91), limitation of physical activity (.88), daily inconveniences in managing the disease (.81), and emotional distress (.87). Conclusion: These preliminary psychometric findings support the internal consistency and construct validity of the ARQOLS, which is a multidimensional concept comprised of restriction of social life, physical disturbances from signs/symptoms, limitation of physical activity, daily inconveniences in managing the disease, and emotional distress. Thus, this questionnaire can serve as an effective and practical tool for evaluating children¡¦s quality of life as affected by asthma. Key words: asthma, quality of life, psychometrics, children
