Angioplasty Nursing Interventions to Diminish Bleeding Around the Groin
Stella G. Lanter, RN, MS, PCCU, Dayton Heart Hospital, Dayton, OH, USA
Learning Objective #1: measure the relationship between two new nursing interventions and complication at the arterial access site in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.
Learning Objective #2: recommend a new standard of care to minimize bleeding complications in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

The use of evidenced-based nursing practice to improve the care of patients who have had angioplasty is a continued goal of clinical researchers.  The Hematoma Task Force and Clinical Practice Committee at The Dayton Heart Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, USA are participating in an ongoing study to determine the best nursing interventions to diminish bleeding around the groin site in patients undergoing angioplasty.  Two nursing interventions were examined over a 17-month period, to have a positive correlation with the number of occurrences of bleeding and vascular complications including rebleed, development of hematoma and pseudoaneurysm.
