The Quality of Sleep and its Related Factors of Shift Work in Southern Taiwan Nurses

Background: Sleep-related problems are common in nurses who are enrolled in clinical situation due to shift work and work-related stress, which may subsequently have serious consequences

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the quality of sleep and to examine the relationships between sleep quality and its’ related factors among Chinese nurses in southern Taiwan.

Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted. The purposive sampling was applied to recruit appropriate samples from 3 medical centers, 4 regional hospitals and 4 local teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan.  Six-hundred subjects consented to participate and completed the study with structure questionnaire.  Data was analyzed by descriptive statistic, t-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression.

Results: The results indicated that: There are 22.8%“ recipients reported their sleep time were enough . 84.2%“of the participants were identified as poor sleepers.  There are significant differences in the condition of sleeping after night shift.  The hours of sleeping time during night shift was negatively correlated with quality of sleep.  Only a factor could explain 67.1 % of the variance of quality of sleep.Conclusions: The findings of this study can provide information regarding sleep problems among southern Taiwan nurses, and to improve nurses’ quality of sleep.
