Impact and Coping Behavior of Healthcare Workers who have Contracted SARS

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact and coping behavior during isolating for treatment of health care workers who contracted SARS when offers medical service. The Phenomenological method was used and seven health worker were recruited who be treatment in medical center, north Taiwan. From June to July of 2003. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and audio-taped after inform concept. Data were analyzed using content analysis method. The result shows the impact while isolating including: family's worry and afraid, interpersonal relationships face challenge, physiological symptom distress, managerial truth-hidden, unfairness, lack of protection materials and lack information. Their coping behaviors: a) problem direct: such as self-helping, searching infection source, and protecting family members. b) emotion direct: such as requesting medical stuff company, realizing the importance of medical professional values, and searching self-assistance. Hopefully, these findings of this study can further be used for preparing a proper clinic care procedures and be considered when establishing related policies by the management.
